The best apps for practicing speaking Italian, honestly
By Parlaviva · Posted
The best app for speaking Italian depends on what you want. For a real person, book a tutor on italki or Preply. For a free daily habit, Duolingo. For hands-free audio in the car, Pimsleur. For unscripted spoken conversation with an AI that corrects you afterwards, Parlaviva, Langua, Speak and Talkpal all do it, with different limits and prices. Below, where each one is better, with every claim taken from the company's own site.
Which app actually makes you speak Italian out loud?
Most apps make you tap, type and repeat. Only some put you in an open conversation where you have to find the words yourself. That is the skill that fails you at the bar, so shop for it.
Duolingo adds open conversation only on its top tier: Video Call, where you talk with the character Lily, is for Duolingo Max subscribers, Italian included. Calls run about a minute early in a course and up to three minutes later. Lily does not correct your grammar, and you are not penalised for mistakes23.
Babbel teaches in five to ten minute lessons, from A1 up to C1 by its own description, and its Babbel Speak feature practises pronunciation in a conversational context4. Its speech recognition for Italian works on the web app5. We could not confirm on Babbel's site that its open conversation practice exists for Italian: the launch covered English and Spanish5.
Pimsleur is audio6. You listen and respond out loud, prompted, in thirty-minute lessons7. It is excellent for pronunciation and recall, but you are answering a script, not steering a conversation.
Parlaviva, Langua, Speak and Talkpal are built around that open conversation. We make Parlaviva, so weigh what follows accordingly.
Which app is best if you want a human tutor?
italki or Preply. Nothing we or any AI app does replaces a patient Italian who can read your face. If you can afford an hour a week with a person, do that, and use an app between lessons.
italki labels each teacher as a Professional Teacher or a Community Tutor: professional teachers for conversation plus structured help with grammar, community tutors for conversation practice13. On its Italian teachers page, seen on 26 October 2026, trial lessons were listed from USD 5.0012.
Preply starts you with a 25 or 50 minute trial lesson, then a plan by hours per week, billed every 28 days; if the first tutor is not a match, you can try two more for free1415. Its Italian tutors page, seen the same day, says the price per class starts from USD 4, with an average of USD 2214.
Here is the Italian you need for a first lesson. Use Lei: it is a stranger, and a teacher.
| Italian | What it means |
|---|---|
| Vorrei fare soprattutto conversazione. | I would mainly like to do conversation practice. |
| Mi corregga pure, per favore. | Please do correct me.Pure softens it: go ahead, correct me. |
| Può ripetere più lentamente? | Can you repeat more slowly? |
| Come si dice questo in italiano? | How do you say this in Italian? |
Which app is best for a free daily habit?
Duolingo. The course is free1. Super Duolingo is what you pay for to skip the ads at the end of lessons, get unlimited hearts and extra streak freezes, and a Family Plan covers up to six accounts1. The streak, the number of days in a row you have studied, is the engine, and for building a five-minutes-a-day habit nothing else here is as good or as cheap1.
Its speaking exercises ask you to speak the correct response to a prompt1; the open conversation lives behind Max23. No Super or Max prices appeared on the pages we could open, so check inside the app.
Parlaviva's free plan, Assaggio, is fifteen minutes of speaking a month, no card. Enough to find out whether a coach works for you, not enough for a daily habit. Go free on Duolingo for the habit and spend the fifteen minutes on one real conversation a week.
Which app is best for learning Italian in the car?
Pimsleur, and it is not close. Its lessons are thirty minutes of audio7, which Pimsleur points out is almost exactly the length of an average United States commute8. The app has a hands-free driving mode, and it is approved by the two most popular in-car integration systems for mobile devices, Apple CarPlay among them8.
On price, Pimsleur's Premium subscription page shows only "Starting at only $150", with no billing period stated, seen 26 October 20267. A monthly price is not on the pages we opened, so check inside the app.
Parlaviva is a bad choice for driving. A call needs your attention and your microphone, and a single call is capped at ten minutes on the free plan, fifteen on Parlaviva, twenty on Fluente.
Which AI conversation app is best for Italian?
Four apps let you hold an unscripted spoken conversation in Italian with an AI. They differ in who they are for, how much talking you get, and what happens after you hang up.
- Langua (languatalk.com) is the most generous on the AI side. Call Mode is hands-free, voices are cloned from real native speakers, and you choose how you are corrected, written or spoken, subtle or explicit9. Free accounts get three minutes of call mode a day and around twenty chat messages a week; the Standard plan allows up to thirty minutes of calls a day, and Unlimited removes the cap910. The trial needs a card and lasts five days on a monthly plan or seven on an annual one; the help centre calls the paid product Langua Pro11. Langua covers more than twenty languages, so Italian is one of many9.
- Speak teaches Spanish, French, Korean, Japanese, Italian and Simplified Chinese to English speakers, in a loop of learn, practise, then apply in back-and-forth conversation with its Speak Tutor, with real-time feedback on pronunciation and phrasing16. There is a seven-day free trial, then a paid plan, Premium or Premium Plus; prices vary by region and are shown in the app16.
- Talkpal offers 130 or more languages on web and mobile. The free Basic plan has a ten-minute daily limit; Premium is unlimited, with a fourteen-day free trial, and prices vary by location17.
- Parlaviva does Italian only. You talk with one of four coaches, from Rome, Florence, Milan and Naples. The coach can speak English or Spanish and shifts into Italian as you progress. After every conversation the transcript is re-read and your mistakes are listed: what you said, the natural version, and how a local would say it. The coach remembers earlier sessions. It runs on iOS and the web, nowhere else.
Honestly: for several languages, or the most AI minutes a month, Langua is the stronger buy. For a curriculum with the conversation at the end of each step, Speak. For unlimited chat across many languages, Talkpal. Parlaviva's case is narrower: Italian only, Italy region by region, and the written review after the call.
How much do the Italian speaking apps cost?
Only prices seen on a company's own page are listed, with the date. The rest sit inside apps or on pages that would not load for us, and we would rather say so than guess.
- Duolingo: free, with Super and Max as paid tiers13. No prices on the pages we opened.
- Pimsleur: "Starting at only $150" on its Premium subscription page, billing period not stated, seen 26 October 20267.
- italki: set per teacher; Italian trial lessons from USD 5.00, seen 26 October 202612.
- Preply: set per tutor; Italian classes from USD 4, average USD 22, seen 26 October 202614.
- Langua: free tier with three call minutes a day; Standard and Unlimited plans, prices not on the pages we opened1011.
- Speak and Talkpal: free trials of seven and fourteen days respectively; prices vary by region1617.
- Parlaviva, in USD: Assaggio, fifteen minutes a month, free, no card. Parlaviva, sixty minutes a month, 9.99 monthly or 79 a year. Fluente, 150 minutes a month, 19.99 monthly or 159 a year. Subscriptions are bought on the web, not inside the iOS app.
What does a coach call sound like compared with a lesson?
A lesson asks you to say the sentence on the screen. A conversation asks you something you did not prepare for. This is the opening of a Parlaviva call, at roughly A2 level.
- GiuliaCiao! Allora, cosa hai fatto oggi?Hi! So, what did you do today?
- YouOggi ho lavorato e poi ho fatto la spesa.Today I worked and then I did the shopping.
- GiuliaBene. Cosa hai comprato?Good. What did you buy?
- YouHo comprato il pane, la frutta e... il formaggio.I bought bread, fruit and... cheese.
- GiuliaQuale formaggio? Parmigiano, pecorino?Which cheese? Parmesan, pecorino?
- YouNon lo so. Come si dice in italiano... il formaggio con i buchi?I don't know. How do you say in Italian... the cheese with holes?
- GiuliaAh, l'Emmental! Si dice così anche in italiano.Ah, Emmental! It's called that in Italian too.
The pause before formaggio and the question about the holes are the point. A tutor would handle that moment better than any app. An AI coach handles it at eleven at night, for the price above, and then writes down what you got wrong.
