Trains in Italy: tickets, validation, and what to say when it is late

By Parlaviva · Posted

A paper regional ticket must be stamped before you board, then stays valid for four hours unless a regional tariff says otherwise. A digital regional ticket needs no stamp and is valid from the scheduled departure of the train you chose. In regions without their own law, Trenitalia's conditions set a 200 euro penalty for an unstamped paper ticket, 50 if you pay the conductor at once. On long-distance trains, Trenitalia and Italo pay back 25 percent of the fare from 60 minutes of delay, 50 percent from 120.

Do you have to validate a train ticket in Italy?

Only the paper one. Trenitalia's regional conditions say a paper single ticket must be validated before departure, at the validators in the station where the journey starts, any time up to 23:59 on the date printed on it. From the moment of validation the ticket is valid for four hours, unless a regional or provincial tariff sets a different period, and the trip must finish inside that window2. If you are still on board when the four hours run out, you may continue to your destination without getting off along the way2.

The Biglietto Digitale Regionale, bought in the app or on the website, is personal and carries your name. It validates itself at the scheduled departure of the train on it; from that moment it cannot be changed and is valid only for that train. Show the QR code on your phone, together with an ID document, whenever staff ask: a digital ticket with no ID counts as no ticket2. If the train is late and the ticket's window expires, you can still finish the journey1.

If every validator in the station is missing or broken, go to the conductor yourself as you board. Validation then costs nothing extra. If you board and say nothing, the penalty rules apply2. The same no-surcharge rule covers boarding with no ticket when the ticket office is closed or absent, the machines are down, and no authorised sales point lies within 350 metres1.

What is the fine for an unvalidated train ticket in Italy?

Where a region has passed its own law, the amounts in that law apply inside that region. Everywhere else, Trenitalia's conditions set a 200 euro penalty for a ticket not validated or validated wrongly. It drops to 100 euro if you pay within fifteen days of the notice, and to 50 euro if you pay the conductor on the spot3. Travelling with no ticket at all costs the full fare plus the same 200, 100 or 50 euro surcharge3.

Two details newcomers miss. A digital ticket you cannot display, because the phone is dead, counts as no ticket3. And the conductor takes cards as well as cash; if the card reader fails, you have three days to pay without any extra charge3.

What compensation do you get when an Italian train is late?

It depends on the train. On Frecce and Intercity trains Trenitalia pays 25 percent of the fare for a delay of 60 to 119 minutes at arrival, and 50 percent for 120 minutes or more. Frecce passengers delayed 30 to 59 minutes get a bonus worth 25 percent of the fare, usable on a new ticket within twelve months, not cash. You have a year to claim, online, in the app, at a ticket office or by phone5.

Regional trains use the same percentages with two floors: the 25 percent tier is only paid on tickets of at least 16 euro, the 50 percent tier only on tickets of at least 8 euro, and nothing under 4 euro is paid out. To claim on a paper ticket you must have validated it both at departure and at arrival, unless the conductor checked it electronically. Digital regional tickets bought since 1 January 2025 with electronic payment are compensated automatically, to the card you paid with, though not all qualify4. Exclusions include Lombardia and Emilia-Romagna regional fares, carnets, cash purchases, Turin's metropolitan rail service, trips with a long-distance or another carrier's leg, and every BER ticket; for those you claim yourself, within a year4. If the train is cancelled or expected to arrive more than 60 minutes late and you give up the trip, you are owed a full refund4.

Italo pays the same tiers, 25 percent from 60 minutes and 50 percent from 120, automatically: Italo Più members get the money in their Italo Wallet, everyone else a voucher, with an email notification. If nothing arrives within 30 days of the trip, file a claim on the website. Delays caused by force majeure are not compensated automatically6.

How do you ask about a delay or a connection in Italian?

Station staff answer specific questions. Lead with the one thing you need, the coincidenza or the rimborso, instead of narrating the whole trip. Use Lei with anyone in uniform.

How do city bus tickets work in Italy?

The same habit as the paper train ticket: buy before you board, stamp as you get on. Each city has its own operator and its own prices, so take Milan as the worked example. ATM's ordinary ticket costs 2.20 euro and is valid for 90 minutes from the first validation, for as many bus, tram and metro rides as fit inside it7. Validate at the start of the trip and every time you change vehicle; in the metro you pass the ticket at the gates on the way in and again on the way out8. Buy it at metro station machines, edicole and authorised retailers, in the ATM app, or by tapping a contactless card or phone on the reader on board, with no fee and no sign-up9. At a check, no valid ticket means a fine8.

Rome's BIT works the same way: 100 minutes from the first validation, a second validation before you board a train if that is not your first vehicle, and tap-to-pay readers on every surface line and metro turnstile10.

The driver is on neither list of places to buy, so the bus-stop question is «Dove posso comprare il biglietto?», where can I buy the ticket, asked at a bar or tabaccheria before the bus comes. Once on board, «Questo autobus va in centro?» checks you are on the right one, and «A quale fermata devo scendere?» gets a local to tell you exactly when to get off.
